Paint is a tricky thing. It can have a lot of weight to it, making it hard to work with. But that doesn’t mean that you need to leave your artificial plastic lawn chairs their boring, plastic white color. You can spruce up your plastic chairs by painting them, which is much lighter and easier to deal with.
In this article, Focal Upright will walk you through steps by steps about How to paint plastic chairs.
After some research, I chose the 2X Ultra Cover Gloss to spray by Rustoleum because it contained both primer and paint in one container.
I believe in reducing steps and achieving faster results.
This spray paint is suitable for use on metal, plastic, and wood.
Because I wanted something bright, beachy, and cheerful, my color choice was Oasis Blue
Bright colors are my favorite.

Hot water can be added to a bucket. To remove mildew and mold from older furniture, use an ammonia-based cleaner. To wash all surfaces of the furniture you are painting, use a sponge. Use a spray hose to spray your ugly chairs. If you have one, use it. To ensure a thorough rinse, spray furniture from several angles.
Use a paint-thinner-soaked cloth to clean new plastic.
If the furniture isn’t too dirty, an all-purpose cleaner such as dish soap will work.
Use a cotton towel to dry the furniture and let it air dry completely. Before you proceed, ensure that the furniture is dry completely.
To paint furniture, choose an area that has good ventilation. Ideal areas are a garage that has the door open and a flat surface outside. You can cover the ground with newspaper or a tarp. To cover furniture surfaces you don’t want to paint, use painter’s tape.
Tape off the top of each leg if you are only painting the table’s surface.
You will need to lightly sand any piece that has been painted previously. A bare plastic surface is often worth sanding, as it will allow primer and paint to adhere better to the furniture. To gently brush the entire surface, use sandpaper or a sponge with a fine-grit sandpaper.
Make sure to test your sanding material on a small area of furniture. If visible scratches are present, reduce pressure or use a finer-grade sanding tool.
After sanding the piece, use a tack cloth to wipe off any dust.
If the furniture is already smooth, skip priming. After drying and cleaning, old furniture may be ready for painting. A light sanding will be beneficial for new plastic furniture.
It’s time to prime the surface once it is dry and clean. Although combination paints and primer sprays are available for plastic surfaces, you will need to use a primer if your furniture is to be painted in a color that is not compatible with plastic outdoor chairs. Use a primer that is designed for outdoor storage of plastic materials.
These can be purchased at your local home improvement shop and come in a spray bottle. Spray the entire surface that you plan to paint with the spray can.
Use a slow back-and-forth motion to apply the primer while keeping the can’s tip 12-18in (30-45cm), from the surface.
Prime the surface first with a primer that is specifically for plastic chairs. For plastic surfaces, a satin finish is preferred. The can should be held upright with the nozzle at 12 inches (30 cm) from the surface. Spray the entire surface evenly using sweeping motions.
Now, you can decide if you need to apply the second coat. It’s up to you. You may need to apply at least another coat if you used primer and paint. After you are satisfied with the paint coverage, allow the piece to dry for 24 hours before using it. You should not remove the painter’s tape before the piece has dried completely.
Clean the furniture with warm water and an all-purpose cleaner. Use fine grit paper to remove any visible scratches on the plastic’s surface. The primer will stick to furniture if the furniture is lightly sanded.
Use a latex-specific primer. Apply one coat of primer that is designed to be used with latex paint. This will ensure that your paint sticks to the plastic furniture you are painting. Plastic does not hold paint as well as other materials so an adhesion primer will be necessary to ensure your topcoat is durable.
You should choose paint that won’t release gasses or odors if you are painting furniture that will be kept in your home. This type of paint is more resistant to staining and easier to clean than any other.
These paints will come in liquid form and offer more color options. Ask for a sample of the color you like at your local hardware store. This will likely be sufficient to cover a chair made of plastic.
You can use a synthetic brush or soak the bristle brush overnight in water before you use it.
I was able to successfully paint the chairs and decided to paint the lounge chair. The lounge chair also had lost its’ shine and was in dire need of a new life.
The lounger was cleaned before I applied the paint. However, it is difficult to tell the difference because the texture of its lounge chair was not as smooth.
I chose “Oasis” again as the color. I applied several coats to the lounger because it required extra coverage due to the porous areas.
The outcome was once again far better than the one before.
After having success with the old plastic chairs I decided to spray paint the Adirondack plastic chairs on my front porch.
They were a light brown color and quite bland.
Because of the results I got from other plastic chairs, I felt more confident in my spray painting abilities. This gave me confidence that the Adirondack plastic chairs would turn out well too.
The Adirondack Chairs were treated in the same way as the other plastic chairs. I chose the Rust-oleum Painter’s Touch Ultra to cover paint + primer Gloss in “Brilliant Blue”, Meadow Green.
To paint the backside of the chair, it is important to flip the chair over. I painted each chair with a few coats of paint and was delighted with the results.
I painted 2 Adirondack chairs with each color. I was thrilled to find that the inspiration pillows worked well with both colors.
You can sand outdoor furniture or metal tables with a wire brush, but not with rust.
Next, clean and dry your table.
Before applying the first coat, place the table on a tarp. I recommend that you wear gloves to protect your finger from spray paint.
I turned the table upside down after the first coat had dried so it was easier to spray paint the legs.
Throughout the entire painting process, you’ll need to shake the can.
The brand suggests spraying two or more light coats at once.
Spray the table in a back-and-forth motion, between 10-16 inches away from the surface.
You will need to use high-heat spray paint instead if you’re painting a grill or fire pit.
