Part 1. Cutting Your Fabric

1. Place your fabric.

Pair your pieces according to the fabric. Take a rectangle of the same fabric and make a circle. Pin it along one side of the rectangle’s rectangle, keeping the right sides together. After you have completed sewing the circle along the long side of the rectangle, sew the two ends at the short end.

The seam allowance is the distance between the edges of the fabric and the seam you are sewing.

Your seam allowance should be larger for heavier fabrics.

Remove each pin when you sew.

3. Start pinning your bottom circles.

The top of each bean bag is the circle you made around the rectangle. Move on to the bottom. Take the second circle of the fabric and pin it along the long side. Do not pin the entire length of the bag. Make sure you have enough space for your zipper.

The zipper is not strictly required for the inner lining.

You can also leave the top intact by simply sewing the bottom circle to your rectangle, just as you did for the top.

Leave an opening approximately 24 to 36 inches (0.61 m to 0.91m) in length.

Once you’re done stuffing the contents of the bean bag through the gap, close it.

A zipper is highly recommended if you’re using expanding foam. As the foam expands within the bean bag, you won’t need to close the gap.

4. Attach your zipper and sew.

Each bag should be at least 48 inches (1.22 m) in length. Then zip it up tightly and then unzip it to a maximum of one finger. Pin the two halves together by securing the right-hand side with the right edge of the bottom circle. Next, pair the right side of the other half with the right side of your rectangle and then do the same.

Continue to unzip the zipper, one at a time. As you do so, pin its halves to each end of the rectangle and bottom circle.

Begin sewing the zipper using your machine’s zipper foot. Leave a quarter-inch (0.6 cm) seam allowance.

After the zipper has been sewn to the rectangle and the bottom circle, you can sew the rectangle and circle together in the same way as the first circle.

5. Get your bean bag chairs full.
